About Team Silva: A Legacy of Martial Arts Excellence

Meet Professor Sergio Silva: A Life of Martial Arts and Service

For over 46 years, Professor Sergio Silva has lived and breathed martial arts. Born and raised in Brazil, the birthplace of BJJ, he moved to the United States with a mission: to spread the transformative power of Jiu-Jitsu and show how it can positively change people's lives.

Our Vision: Empowering the Alameda Community

Our vision is to empower people of all ages—from toddlers to adults—with self-defense, confidence, fitness, and anti-bullying skills through the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We are dedicated to sharing the benefits of Jiu-Jitsu with our community and helping every student unlock their full potential.

Credentials & Accomplishments:

Professor Silva was the first Brazilian black belt to anchor his journey in the beautiful island of Alameda, starting in 2007 after winning the Submission Wrestling World Championships. His passion is to share the art of Jiu-Jitsu and its many benefits with the community.

  • 5th-degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

  • Black Belt in Judo

  • World Champion in Submission Wrestling

  • National and International Champion in BJJ and MMA

  • Degree in Physical Education from Brazil

  • Over 32 years of teaching expertise

Our Philosophy: BJJ as a Game of Human Chess

Professor Silva often compares BJJ to chess. It is a martial art that relies on technique, strategy, and leverage, not punching or kicking. This philosophy empowers a smaller person to overcome a larger opponent through skill rather than brute force. Every move has a consequence, and success comes from patience, timing, and focus. This approach translates directly to life, teaching students to respond to challenges thoughtfully and with confidence.

From the Mat to the Community: Anti-Bullying and Law Enforcement Training

Professor Silva's mission extends beyond the academy. He developed "Verbal Jiu-Jitsu," a communication method based on BJJ principles, to handle conflict constructively. He offers free anti-bullying speeches to Bay Area schools to ensure every child can learn in a safe environment.

💼 How BJJ Helps at Work

You know how work gets — deadlines, coworkers’ drama, people freaking out over things that don’t matter.
BJJ trains you to:

• Stay calm under pressure
• Solve problems without reacting emotionally
• Think clearly when things get messy
• Manage stress with breath and grounding
• Handle conflict without blowing up
• Stay disciplined even when you’re tired

Most people melt when things get tight.
BJJ people?
We breathe, adjust, move smart… and finish the day like adults.

❤️ How BJJ Helps in Relationships

Relationships require patience and the ability to not freak out every time something feels difficult.

BJJ teaches:

• Listening instead of reacting
• Understanding your partner’s rhythm
• Staying grounded during emotional storms
• Humility
• Compassion
• Communication instead of confrontation

You literally learn on the mat how to stay present with someone who’s close, unpredictable, emotional, or overwhelmed.
Good practice for life, right?

🧠 How BJJ Helps Your Mind

Life hits harder than any choke.
But BJJ gives you:

• Mental toughness
• Emotional stability
• Clarity
• Confidence
• A stronger sense of self
• The ability to stay centered

People train for years and never realize the real superpower:
You learn how to breathe, before you break.

That alone can change a whole life.Solving puzzles and problems by taking your time figuring out the best solution.

👦👧 How BJJ Helps Kids

For kids, this is the secret weapon:

Respect
• Focus
• Emotional regulation
• Confidence
• Social skills
• Anti-bullying ability (without aggression)
• Discipline
• Body awareness

* The power of Leadership

*Manners

Kids learn how to handle emotions, not hide them.
They learn how to solve problems, not panic.
They learn how to stand up for themselves without hurting anyone.

🧘‍♂️ How BJJ Helps Your Spirit

You learn humility.
You learn patience.
You learn how to lose without breaking and win without bragging.
You learn how to choose peace even when you’re strong enough to choose violence.

Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t give you a new body.
It gives you a new way of walking through the world.
