If you are looking to enroll in a martial arts school or program READ THIS BEFORE GOING FORWARD
Not All Martial Arts Schools Are The Same.
“4 Things to look before signing up in a Martial Arts School.”
Do you Feel Comfortable in the Academy?
When you walk in the place do the people there acknowledge you or do they just look at you funny? Are the instructors and students welcoming or do they look at you like your are the turkey in the oven? Is the place full of muscle heads or do regular people train there. Is the place so packed that none of the students receive attention from the instructor? Trust your Gut.
Is What They Teach Realistic?
A lot of academies say they show “deathtouch” moves or how to knock somebody out without touching them; and when you ask them to prove it, they say it’s too dangerous to demonstrate or “our style is too
dangerous to compete in tournaments“. Granted not everybody has to compete in a tournament; but it’s good to know if your goal is to learn self defense, that its gonna work when you really need it to.
Is There A Structured Curriculum That They Can Point To? Is it Available For Everybody to See?
A lot of times martial art schools will throw new students in with the bunch with an attitude and hope you will just pick it up as you go along. For some people, this may be fine, but the majority of people see better results when a curriculum is available to reference from and it is readily available in case students have questions about specific techniques.
Is the Academy a Shrine To The Teacher or is it a place where the students are the star?
In a lot of places you will see an almost cult like following for the instructor. Don’t get me wrong, its very important to learn from and accomplished accredited instructor. Some places will say repeatedly say how good the instructor is but will not say anything about what any of their students have accomplished. Make sure the instructor has had some real training and experienced in martial arts; or has accreditation or a lineage they can point to. There are others who have had NO formal training and are just looking to take your money. A lot of times these instructors have given them selves their own black belt. That’s not to say that there are instructors that have never accomplished much on their own, but have been able to produce champions. It’s hard to take someone to the high level if they have never been there themselves.
Feel Free to use this as a Martial Arts buyers guide in helping you decide what Martial Arts school is best for you.
